Sport Highlights 20 – 22 November

Rugby history will be in the making at Twickenham in London on Saturday when Victor Matfield and Bakkies Botha will play together as locks for the very last time.

Sports fans can look forward weekend action in cricket, soccer and golf, while yet another rugby match takes place that will interest South Africans.

Cricket

After the cricket test match between South Africa and India in Bangalore was called a draw because too much rain had fallen to make more than two days of play possible, South Africa gets another chance to still win the four-test series. India won the first test, but with two tests remaining, South Africa will definitely try to win both.

The third test, which will be played in the Vidarbha cricket association stadium, Jamtha, Nagpur, will start on Wednesday 25 November. Play will start at 06:00 (SA time) every day.

Meanwhile the local Ram Slam T20 series continues in South Africa. The Titans’ only game of the weekend will take place on Friday, November 20, when they play in Cape Town at Newlands against the Cape Cobras. This game will start at 18:00.

Athletics

The holiday season is now approaching and many road athletes work harder than usual to make up for the coming lazy days in December. For serious athletes who want to suffer for the last time this year the Tom Jenkins half marathon, which will take place on Saturday morning, is just the right medicine. This race is run over the hill between Arcadia and the Moot-area via Tom Jenkins Avenue. For the less serious runners there will be a 10km race and a 5km fun run. The half marathon and the 10km race starts at 06:00 and the 5km fun run will start at 06:10. Enquiries: John on 082-277-6819.

Rugby

Several South Africans will be in action when the Barbarians play against Argentina this Saturday at Twickenham in London. This game will be the final opportunity for Victor Matfield and Bakkies Botha to play together as locks. The game starts at 17:00 (SA time).

Golf

Similar to Johannesburg and Pretoria, Cape Town also has its own open golf championship. The Cape Town Open, played at the Royal Cape golf club and has prize money of R1.2 million. It will start on Thursday 19 November and end on Sunday 22 November. This will be the second last big SA tournament before the Nedbank Golf Challenge early in December.

Soccer

Two of the three local Premiership soccer teams will be in action in this top league this weekend. Unfortunately they both play at the same time (20:15) on Saturday night.

Mamelodi Sundowns will take on Free State Stars in the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville.

SuperSport United will travel to Cape Town and play against Ajax Cape Town at the Athlone Stadium in the Mother City.
