Sport highlights 17-19 June
Both the Proteas and the Springboks will have to win this weekend to boost the morale of South African sports lovers.
With the cold that struck Gauteng in the last few days, there is fortunately a lot of action for sports fans to follow while nestled in front of the TV.
Rugby
Three national teams could be in action this weekend, depending on the outcome of the Junior Springboks’ last group match against France on 15 June.
If they beat France, they could be involved in a play-off game on Monday 20 June.
The SA ‘A’ team will try to turn their luck around against the Saxons of England, after they lost the first match last Friday. This game takes place at Outeniqua Park in George at 19:05 on Friday night.
The Springboks also get a chance to put on a better performance than the first test against the Irish last weekend, when they face them again in the second test on Saturday. This important game will be played at Emirates Airline Park (Ellis Park) in Johannesburg at 17:00.
Golf
The 116th US Open will be played from Thursday at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. This is the second so-called ‘major’ of the year and golf lovers will probably be glued to their TV sets till very late on Sunday night.
This is the ‘major’ that both Ernie Els and Retief Goosen have won twice in their careers, and South African fans will hope for another local star to be there when the winner’s trophy is handed over.
According to reports, the players will be confronted by a very difficult course this year.
South Africans to look out for are: Thomas Aiken, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Branden Grace, Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel and Jaco van Zyl.
Cricket
The West Indies Tri-Nation Series is still running and the Proteas are again in the position where they cannot afford to lose again. They play their second-last game in the round robin phase against Australia in Barbados at 19:00 (SA time) on Sunday.
Athletics
The local track and field athletics season is already over but, just for old times’ sake, athletics lovers can look forward to the 20th Africa senior championships that will take place from 22 to 26 June in Durban.
– Although most road runners got their weekly running fix on the public holiday on 16 June already, there is still an event to look forward to this weekend.
The Take 5 Team Relay is the perfect opportunity for the casual runner/walker to form a team with regulars. This race takes place at the Waterkloof Air Force Base in Centurion and teams have the option to run/walk the 15km or the 25km. Enquiries: Hank on 012 460 9065.
Football
The University of Pretoria (AmaTuks) will be involved in two of the most important games of the year in the next few days.
Their last chance to avoid relegation from the ABSA Premiership comes in their games against Mbombela United on Saturday at 15:00 at the Kanyamazane Stadium, and on Wednesday at 15:00, when they take on Highlands Park at home at the Tuks Stadium.
