Morkel promises more top quality cricket
Proteas great Albie Morkel aims to perform at the highest level and has also not ruled out a return to the national team.
The Unlimited Titans skipper and Proteas all-rounder Albie Morkel has vowed to maintain a high standard cricket following a successful season.
Morkel, who now only plays limited overs cricket, retired from four-day test matches last season.
The Titans finished 2015/2016 strongly after securing two trophies, only missing on the Momentum One Day Cup.
The 35-year-old big hitter has scored 4 117 runs at an average of 44.26 and has captured 203 wickets in his career.
According to the Titans website, Morkel said he decided not to continue playing four-day cricket because it took six days out of his schedule, which was time he could have spent with family.
He also said he did not want to stand in the way of younger players.
In the past two seasons, South Africans have seen Morkel’s career be rejuvenated following big hits and match-winning performances.
He averaged 93.33 in the Momentum One Day Cup competition in 2014/2015 and he was instrumental in helping the Pretoria side clinch yet another trophy in the 2015/2016 Ram Slam challenge.
Morkel was called for the Proteas late last year and produced a man of the match performance against India.
He made his ODI debut for the Proteas 12 years ago, but became a regular member from 2007 until 2012.
At his peak, Morkel was widely regarded as one of the best finishers in limited overs cricket that saw him become one highest players in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Although Morkel does not rule out a return to the South African team, his focus is primarily on taking the Titans to more limited-overs silverware.
“I think the environment at the Titans is so healthy that it produces good performances. Look at the players who joined us from the Lions last season. They both hit top form,” he said.
