The top ranked men’s team of Leo Williams and Grant Goldschmidt retained their number one spot at the Flying Fish Beach Volleyball Pretoria tournament when they beat the second-placed duo of Colin Pocock and Casey Augoustides.

“It was a tough two days, but we knew everyone wanted to beat us. We kept cool and did not buckle under the pressure, which kept us mentally strong,” Williams said after winning the series opener.

In the female division, the top seeded pair of Lianne Vink and Dieke Hessels, were dethroned by the team of Martina Bonnerova and Johannesburg-based Palesa Masinga.

Bonnerova and Masinga came out firing, in the opening set but were made to work hard in the second set, to ultimately seal the match. With the exclusion of Masinga, this is the second time that these three ladies have meet, in a Flying Fish Beach Volleyball tournament final and the Cape Town-based Czech Bonnerova emerged victorious on both occasions.

The Flying Fish Beach Volleyball Pretoria tournament delivered more than enough excitement for all in attendance. The two-day tournament was hosted at the University of Pretoria Sports Campus.

For the ladies it was the experienced pairing of Kirsten Pocock and Vita Nel that ended in the third position, while in the male division last year’s King of the Beach winner, Jerome Fredericks, paired up with Dominic Goliath to claim the third spot.

The Pretoria leg was the first of eight tournaments in the Flying Fish Beach Volleyball series, which will be hosted at some of South Africa’s best venues. The second tournament takes place in Polokwane at the University of Limpopo between the 15 and 17 September 2016.
