TuksCricket team starts student’s tournament with two victories
The TuksCricket team which is participating in the Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals as a national South African team, started the tournament in Sri Lanka with two brilliant victories.
The Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals got underway on Sunday at the Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel in Colombo with the group draws and opening function.
The evening was a true Sri Lankan cultural experience with traditional song and dance to start the evening off.
True to Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals style, the group draw is done through an activity that is own to the country that it is hosted in. This year the captains took part in a game of Kana Muttiya which involves the player to try and break a pot whilst blindfolded. The captains had to break a pot with a cricket stump and their group number was hidden inside these pots. Eventually South Africa (Tuks) was drawn in a group together with Bangladesh, Australia and England. In the other group is the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India.
On the first day of group matches in the Red Bull Campus Cricket Word Finals, Team South Africa played against England at the SCC. England won the toss and selected to bowl first.
South Africa lost the early wicket of Gerry Pike (7 from 10 balls) but recovered well and managed to end up on 199/5. Rubin Hermann top scored with 72 from 35 balls and Tony de Zorzi (36 from 33) and Evan Jones (31 from 20) helped the team set the target of 200 for the English.
In return, Lungi Ngidi struck early taking two wickets and had England 23/2 in the fifth over. All the Tuks bowlers put in a massive effort and managed to restrict England to 145/7in 20 overs. Lungi Ngidi (4-1-16-3) and Thomas Kaber (4-0-18-3) were the top wicket takers for South Africa and Rubin Hermann was named Man of the Match.
Day two of the competition saw South Africa played against Australia. The Aussies won the toss and elected to bowl first.
South Africa lost two early wickets in Gerry Pike (9 from 7 balls) and Murray Coetzee (20 from 17 balls) but recovered well and managed to end up on 186/6. Rubin Hermann top scored with 55 from 34 balls, not out and Tony de Zorzi (25 from 23) and Thomas Kaber (21 from 14) helped the team set the target of 187 for the Australians.
In the second innings, David Mogotlane struck on the second ball of the first over to have Australia 0/1 in the first over. All the Tuks bowlers put in a massive effort and managed to restrict Australia to 132/8 in 20 overs. Sean Phillips (3-0-15-3) and Lungi Ngidi (4-0-28-2) were the top bowlers for South Africa.
Rubin Hermann was named Man of the Match again.
