Dondol claim victory over Mofolo
Dondol Stars beat 9-men Molofo BT Stars 4-2 in their first ABC Motsepe League encounter at Muckleneuk Sports Ground in Mamelodi on Sunday.
Local soccer team Dondol Stars began their ABC Motsepe League campaign with a bang defeating Soweto outfit Mofolo BT Stars 4-2 at Muckleneuk Sports Ground in Mamelodi on Sunday.
Mofolo were crippled by unavailability of players as they had brought along 9.
Dondol’s victory came courtesy of Walter Makhofane, Johannes Mathebula, Solomuzi Ndlovu and Lesedi Kapinga’s boots followed by consolation goals by Phumlani Matine for the visitors.
The Mamelodi outfit showed they wanted nothing less than victory from the beginning in a dominant attacking display.
This paid off in the 25th minute when Makhofane opened the scoring, firing into the net after a one-two with Kapinga.
The goal put the visitors under immense pressure, which saw most players moving forward in an attempt to find an equaliser.
This made the defence of Mofolo very weak and they duly conceded another goal.
Mathebula finished perfectly from a cross from Mpho Kvoabi on the left to extend the lead in the 30th minute.
The match went to the break at 2-0 for Dondol.
In the second half, they further extended their lead in 51th and 60th minutes, thanks to Ndlovu and Kabinga respectively.
To their credit, the visitors would not give up and were rewarded when Matine put his name on the score sheet in 79th minute from a cross from Sphiwe Phafane then later scored from a freekick.
Mofolo coach Thulani Nkwazi said they lost because they were unprepared.
“We could not sign enough players on time and as the result we had to play our first match of the season with 9 players instead of 11,” Nkwazi said.
He said he was proud of his team’s good performance despite the problem they were facing.
Dondol coach Shoes Malwa said he was pleased with his team’s overall performance but he was disappointed they conceded two.
“We were not supposed to concede those goals. They were not difficult shots to save,” Malwa said.
The local side has set the standard high declaring their intention to win the league in their maiden campaign.
“Although we are still new in the league, our intention is to win it and advance to the first division.”
Dondol will play Alexandra United at Alexandra Stadium on Friday at 19:00 and Mofolo face Munsieville Stars at 15:00 the next day.
