The Blue Bulls will on Friday have a minute of silence before kick-off in their Currie Cup clash against Griquas to honour the life of Tiaan Joubert (born 03/12/1973), who died on the weekend.

Joubert suffered a heart-attack at the young age of 42 and will be fondly remembered by Blue Bulls fans for his contribution to the “Ligbloues” in their Currie Cup win of 2002. Starting at inside centre, Joubert played a great match against the Golden Lions at Ellis Park in 2002, helping the Blue Bulls to a famous win and a first Currie Cup for coach Heyneke Meyer.

It was sweet reward for Joubert at the time, who followed Meyer from SWD, having also played for the Golden Lions, Leopards, Eagles and Bulls. Joubert also played for SA Barbarians, SA Under-21 and represented the Golden Lions at Craven Week while a scholar at Randburg High School.

The president of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, Mr Gert Wessels, expressed his condolences to the family of Joubert and to his former team mates.

“We will always remember Tiaan and his abrasive style of play, taking the ball up in contact, sacrificing himself to create space for someone else on the outside. Tiaan played over a 100 first class matches, with 62 of those for the Blue Bulls, but his finest was probably that day at Ellis Park, where he created so many opportunities for others to shine,” Wessels said.

“He will be remembered as one of the heroes in the Blue Bulls Currie Cup legacy.”
