Cooperation between tennis clubs creates new possibilities
A number of tennis clubs recently started a collaborative project that creates new opportunities for players at all levels.
A new tennis initiative has seen local clubs joining forces to beef up the sport in Pretoria.
They have set up what has been dubbed the Unity Tennis Group to organise regular tournaments.
The three tennis clubs are the Defence Tennis Club in Thaba Tshwane, a club in nearby Laudium and the Atteridgeville Saulsville Tennis Association.
Also involved are the Tshwane department of sport and recreation, DA councillor Ina Strijdom and Johan Dippenaar, who will help with the acquisition of lottery funding.
One of the main objectives of the group is to organise a Cohesion Tennis Tournament every two months among participating clubs.
The clubs will also help each other out in official league matches of Tennis Gauteng North.
This will be constructive experience for all the clubs involved.
Rekord visited the Valhalla Tennis Club recently, where their last Cohesion Tennis Tournament was held for 2016.
Although a social league, the competition was tough and the excitement and buzz was clearly evident on the tennis courts.
Ed Murray, of Valhalla Tennis Club, said the project helped the clubs with transformation initiative and players benefited because they participated in more tournaments.
Strijdom said practical assistance and development of sports in the community would be a serious matter for the new council government. Strijdom confirmed that the repair and maintenance of sports facilities were high on the local government’s list of priorities.Another face among the invited guests at the event was CEO of Tennis SA, Richard Glover, who said he was very excited about what was happening. He said sponsors would be attracted to the concept, especially since they would be exposed on a larger scale.
