Wheelchair race hosted to help disabled people
The first Oppi Bol Wheelchair Race was presented recently to help empower people with disabilities.
A disability awareness road race was held by Oppie Bol foundation in Thaba Tshwane last Saturday.
The day formed part of the International day for persons with disabilities, celebrated annually on 3 December.
Both athletes with disabilities and their able-bodied counterparts participated in the event, where athletes had the option of a 10km race and a shorter route of 5km.
Able-bodied athletes had to participate in wheelchairs.
The event was hosted by the Pretoria Military Marathon club, the Voortrekker Monument Stap en Draf club and various sponsors.
The day was supported by various running clubs around Pretoria.
Top athletes from Pretoria participated, including the likes of the Nedbank junior sportsman of the year Lesetja Bopade, who won the men’s 5km race in a time of 20:15.
The aim of the day was to make residents aware that people with disabilities are equal contributors and participants to building a sustainable future.
