Novice Comrades runners in Pretoria get help and advice

A seminar to help novice participants in the Comrades marathon will be presented on Tuesday in Irene.

Novice Comrades marathon athletes from Pretoria are in for a treat.

In a bid to get first time Comrades Marathon participants race-ready for Sunday – 4 June 2017, the Comrades Marathon Association has teamed up with major sponsor, Bonitas Medical Fund to present the sought-after Bonitas Comrades novice seminars.

The penultimate novice session will be hosted by the Irene Athletics Club at The Auditorium, Agricultural Research Council, Irene Campus, Olifantsfontein Road, Irene in Pretoria on Tuesday, 4 April at 19:00.

At the seminars relevant training information and advice from the Comrades Coach, Lindsey Parry and other experts, including a medical doctor and dietician are shared. Some of the topics include injury prevention; treatment of injuries; training; running shoes; tapering and race day strategies.

The medical doctor will advise on the dangers of taking medication whilst running. The dietician will cover runners’ nutrition, including what to eat and drink while training as well as race day sustenance.

Registered Dietician, Nicki de Villiers works with athletes and guides them to optimum nutrition to train well and achieve their running goals. Nicki has been working in the field of dietetics for around 20 years and has been concentrating on sports nutrition for the last 12 years.

Official Comrades Coach, Lindsey Parry will share valuable information about training, including recovery; reasons for failure and how to prevent them.

Parry’s advice to novices is: “As a novice, your main priority should be to arrive at the start line of Comrades, injury free and healthy. A few less miles in the bank and fresh legs will serve you far better than lining up with problems before the gun goes.”

These seminars are interactive and highly informative. Entry is free and bookings are not necessary.
