SPAR women’s race Pretoria launched in style
The 2017 SPAR Women’s Race Pretoria was officially launched at the Capital Menlyn Maine hotel on Tuesday.
SPAR’s Women’s Challenge has long been about much more than thousands of ordinary people who get the opportunity to participate in a 10km road race with top athletes and celebrities.
The Pretoria leg of this series, also known as the SPAR Women’s Race Pretoria, is probably the best example of what can be done if people are willing to work together to help others. That’s why this year’s theme is going to hit the spot – #BetterTogether.
SPAR’s belief in working together originates from the vision of Dutch founder Adriaan van Well when he established the organisation in 1932. SPAR believe that original sentiment is as relevant today as it was back then. SPAR believes one person can make a true difference, but together they have the strength and the ability to change the lives of those who need us most. Therefore, supporters and prospective participants can start tweeting about the race theme #BetterTogether.
This year’s Pretoria leg of the SPAR Women’s Challenge was officially launched with a lavish function at the Capital Menlyn Maine hotel on Tuesday night. Guests at the event not only got the opportunity to meet the top athletes who will participate as well as the brand ambassadors, but everyone was affected in some way by the message behind this year’s theme and the possibility it holds of helping less privileged people.
It will probably be difficult to improve on the previous years’ success, but if the enthusiasm and innovation at Tuesday’s event is taken into account, it will probably happen.
The star of the evening was singer and motivational speaker Jo Black. He touched guests deeply with his message which perfectly matched the theme of this year’s race. Black started the “Be That Guy” campaign. His testimony is powerful and it was an emotional experience for the audience when he told his story about his difficult childhood and his experiences as young man during which he went through difficult times.
Fitness motivator Ricardo Gressel, also known as Warrior Ric, gave special energy to the function with his unique style of doing things as master of ceremonies. His ability to make the audience participating in his presentation certainly helped to highlight this year’s event.
The Pretoria leg of the SPAR Women’s Challenge has grown from humble beginnings to what it is today – the premier event of the Gauteng North road running calendar. The race began in 1996 with just 600 entrants racing along the University of Pretoria’s Groenkloof campus. Today, more than 25 000 entrants from around Gauteng run through Centurion’s streets, starting at SuperSport Park stadium.
This year’s race will take place on Saturday 5 August. Athletes can choose between the 10km race and the 5km fun run/walk.
Several welfare organisations will again benefit from this year’s SPAR Women’s Race Pretoria.
