Nine local athletes on their way to Junior African Championship

Athletics Gauteng North's junior stars dominate the South African team to participate in the Junior Africa championship at the end of June in Algeria.

Athletics South Africa has announced the final 14-member national team for the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) African Junior Championships in Tlemcen, Algeria from 29 June to 2 July.

They will be led by the likes of local Olympic sprinter Clarence Munyai, who set a national Junior 200m record of 20.10 seconds in Pretoria earlier this season, and another local star, SA Junior 100m Hurdles record holder Taylon Bieldt, who clocked a national best of 13.35 to reach the final at the World Under 20 Championships in Bydgoszcz last year.

Munyai and Bieldt will be accompanied by other local stars such as Thembo Monareng (100m), George Kusche (800m and 1500m), Patrick Duvenhage (discus throw and shot put), Werner Visser (discus throw) and Yolandi Stander (discus throw).

* The South African youth team that will travel to Kenya for the IAAF World Youth Championships in Nairobi is also dominated by Gauteng North athletes. This team consist of 12 members, including nine boys and three girls. Six of them are local athletes from Pretoria. The IAAF World Youth Championships is scheduled for 12-16 July.

In the track events all the selected athletes are from Pretoria. They are Retshiditswe Mlenga (100m and 200m), Tshenolo Lemao (100m and 200m), Julian Bogner (110m hurdles and long jump), Sokwakhana Zazini (400m hurdles), Zeney van der Walt (400m hurdles) and Gontse Morake (400m hurdles).

ASA President, Aleck Skhosana, congratulated all the athletes for being selected to represent their country at the highest level.

“We wish both teams the best of luck. These may be small teams, but they are both strong, and we believe these athletes will be able to carry the SA flag with pride,” said Skhosana.
