Miss Earth SA finalist embraces #BetterTogether with SPAR Women’s Challenge
Miss Earth SA, Orielia Egambaram will be one of the 25000 participants in this year's SPAR Women’s Race Pretoria.
Miss Earth SA, Orielia Egambaram, has announced that she will be taking part in the 2017 Pretoria SPAR Women’s Challenge with a team in order to help make a difference and support this year’s #BetterTogether race message.
Egambaram said that she was inspired to enter the race because she believes that the SPAR Women’s Challenge races create a platform for supporting women and fighting injustice against women.
“I saw the SPAR Women’s Challenge as the perfect platform to unite with other women and stand against these social injustices. My position within the Miss Earth South Africa leadership program as a Regional Finalist has evoked a new sense of responsibility within me wherein I was encouraged to bring to light various environmental issues which are prevalent today. I believe that by joining this race I will be able to create a sense of awareness amongst every person that I will encounter,” said Orielia.
Orielia chose to embrace this year’s race theme and run with a team as opposed to doing the race alone. She says that she felt given the theme she had a higher chance of reaching her goals with the support of other.
“I felt that I would be able to better achieve my goal of creating awareness by connecting like-minded people as opposed tackling this task alone. I am aware that one person is quite capable of making a positive difference in the world, but, by uniting individuals from various backgrounds, we are reminded that certain challenges are bigger than ourselves and thus together we can achieve more.”
To date, Orielia has amassed a team of 20 people to participate in the SPAR Women’s Challenge with her although she notes that the group is growing all the time and she has extended an invitation to many more people. Her team’s entry will be sponsored by Tropika.
Egambaram said that the race taking part in Women’s Month was significant to her.
“I am reminded of the special history which South Africa holds with regards to women’s empowerment. Times may have progressed, however, as women we need to be able to uphold one another rather than tear each other down. An initiative such as the SPAR Women’s Challenge allows us to stand together and shed light on social injustices and ill treatment of women – be it culturally, socially, or in the work place. It allows us to be #BetterTogether as we demand that change must be evoked.”
