Motorsport enthusiasts in Pretoria are given the opportunity to see the country’s best rally drivers in action when the Highveld Motor Club (HMC) presents the HMC Electrothread Rally 2017 in and around Bronkhorstspruit.
This rally will be the 5th round of the National Rally Championship. This event will therefore be a National rally which stretches over two days, but a regional event will also be run where teams choose to only rally the Saturday.
The rally will be held over two days on 18 and 19 August. It will cover a total of 150 kilometres of gravel roads divided into eleven fast pace technical stages.
As spectators have come accustomed to over the past years, the HMC members promise to deliver a well organised event including action packed spectator points, free for all to view.
On Friday morning the teams will partake in the Recce run. This means they will go over the stages in order to adapt the route notes, knows as pace notes, to their liking.
Three stages will be raced with the last stage which starts at 18:00. This stage promises to deliver much excitement in the night.
Approximately 35 vehicles are expected to start stage one of the rally on Friday afternoon at 14:00. The second stage is scheduled to start at 18:00 on Friday on a farm close to Godrich Toyota, which will serve as the Central Service Park.
On Saturday morning the rally will start at 08:00 with the last stage starting at 15:00 at Willem Prinsloo Museum.
Various vehicles will be seen competing against each other in three different classes in the National Championship.
Class R2 is for vehicles with an engine capacity of 1.6 litre. The Classic Class is the battle between pre-1985 vehicles and then there is the Open class.
In the Regional Championship teams will complete in class NR1, NR2, NR3 and NR4 providing rally entertainment with vehicles ranging from 1.4 litre VW Golf vehicles to 2.5 litre Turbo Charged 4×4 Subaru vehicles.
Seven local riders will be competing in this rally. They are Hergen Fekken, Chris Coertse, Nico Nienaber, Gert Jansen van Rensburg, Sybrand van den Berg, Gerhard Aucamp and Tjaart Conradie.
Frekken will be returning to the rally scene after taking a break from motorsport for two years, but this fast-paced rally icon is sure to bring great rallying to the spectators over the weekend. Chris Coertse is currently ranked third in the National Rally Championship and should expect great competition from team mate Fekken.
