Best junior tennis talent in action at popular tournament

The second of a series of three tennis tournaments in Gauteng North's Wilson Challenge was presented in Groenkloof last week.

The 16 tennis courts at Gauteng North Tennis‘s base in Groenkloof were teeming with the best young talent in Gauteng last week when the second Gauteng North Wilson Challenge tennis tournament was presented.

This popular tournament attracts Pretoria’s top junior tennis stars, while some players from other regions in Gauteng also take part.
More than 200 junior tennis players competed in five age groups at the second tournament of the Gauteng North Wilson Series in the u.10, u.12, u.14 and u.16 categories, while several of the province’s top juniors also participated in the open section for men and women.

Several of South Africa’s top-rated junior tennis stars were among the participants, ensuring that the tennis on show was of a high standard.

There was also a spirit of excitement at the prize-giving function after the action when Lourens Venter, chairman of Gauteng North’s junior tennis, announced that negotiations were at an advanced stage to make the tournament part of the prestigious international Grand Prix series from next year.

If negotiations succeed and Pretoria can get its own Grand Prix tennis tournament, it will be a huge boost for junior tennis, not only in Gauteng but also in South Africa.

This means, among other things, that South African junior tennis players who cannot afford to travel overseas to participate in the Grand Prix tournaments will be given the opportunity to compete locally against the world’s best junior talent.
