Local judokas won 14 medals at the African Junior Championships
Local judokas of the Tuks Judo Club showed that South Africa has a rosy future in this sport when they won several medals at the recent African Junior and Cadet Championships in Burundi.
Judokas form the Tuks Judo Club had a good showing at the recent African Junior and Cadet Championships in Burundi. The team won a total of 14 medals.
Their coach Nikola Filipov could not help smiling as it is the best performance ever by the club’s younger judokas at an African Championships.
Filipov often refers to the youngsters as his Olympic generation, confidently predicting that one or more could represent South Africa at the 2024 Games. That is if he can find the proper funding to help them get the necessary international experience.
Donné Breytenbach won bronze medals in the cadet (under-17) as well as the junior (under-20) categories. She fights in the under-52kg category. In the build-up to the championships, she also competed at a Budapest Cup Tournament where she took the bronze medal.
Her twin brother, Thomas, won a silver medal in under-73kg cadet category in Burundi.
The other judokas who medalled at the African Championships are Katja Lang (silver and bronze), Charné Griesel (bronze) and Devan Stemmet (bronze).
The Tuks judokas also won seven medals in the different team categories.
