SPORT: Soccer fans angry over Tau’s ‘treatment’ in Europe

“Sending Percy Tau to this second division feeder club for Brighton is a joke, and it doesn't in any way advance South African football.”

South African soccer fans are angry after former Mamelodi Sundowns forward Percy Tau was loaned to a second-tier league club in Belgium.

Last month, Tau completed his move from Sundowns to English premier league side Brighton & Hove Albion for an undisclosed fee.

This week the English club announced the 24-year-old year old joined Belgian second division side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise on a season-long loan deal.

Fans took to social media to vent their dissatisfaction.

Many were hoping to see the former Clapham High School pupil rubbing shoulders with the likes of Sergio Aguero, Paul Pogba, Mohammed Salah and other great players who featured at this year’s world cup.

“I don’t understand this Percy Tau transfer saga now. They buy him from Sundowns only to send him on loan to a second division club,” Ndlela Nkosi said in a tweet.

Stephen Murray wrote: “Sending Percy Tau to this second division feeder club for Brighton is a joke, and it doesn’t in any way advance South African football.”

According to reports, the reason Tau was loaned was due to a work permit. In order to get a UK work permit, Tau needs to play a full season in Europe.

Should he finish his season with the Belgian side, he will be eligible to play for Brighton next season.

“The loan is not a bad move, especially for him. I think as fans, we’re disappointed that we won’t be watching him in the EPL. I just hope Percy Tau doesn’t go back to a relegated Brighton at the end of this season-long loan. That would be painful,” said Siyanda Mqina.
