Blistering times at Puma School of Speed athletics in Pretoria

The fourth Puma School of Speed athletics meeting, which was held in Pretoria over the past weekend, has produced brilliant performances on the track.

Track & field supporters were treated to a speed storm of note on Saturday with junior track & field stars following in the footsteps of the World’s Fastest Man Usain Bolt at the fourth PUMA School of Speed athletics meeting that was hosted at the Tuks Athletics stadium.

Launched in November 2016 by PUMA and Stillwater Sports, the series is committed to the development of athletics talent in South Africa by discovering the fastest young speedsters.

Catering for track & field stars between the ages of 14-19, the PUMA School of Speed Series features track events like 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 100m Hurdles (Boys 15, Girls 17 & 19 only), 90m Hurdles (Girls 15 only) and 90m Hurdles (Girls 15 only) and 110m Hurdles (Boys 17 & 19 only), as well as field events like long jump and high jump,.

In the 100m event for girls under-19, Antonette van der Merwe from Hoërskool Eldoraigne claimed the top spot on the podium with a lightning fast time of 11.61 seconds.

Rose Xeyi from Prestige College came in second, while Nicola van der Merwe finished third after Van der Merwe.

Zander van Stade from Hoërskool Zwartkop in Centurion claimed gold in the Boy’s under-19 200m in an impressive time of 21.30 seconds.

Another local star, Josua Gouws from Hoërskool Die Wilgers, was on fire in the 400m for Boy’s under-19. He crossed the finish line first in 47.48 seconds.

Except their medals, podium winners of each event final received several incentives from Puma. This include sports bags and caps.
