Tuks back to its winning ways in the Varsity Football Tournament

Although the Tuks football team is not satisfied with the quality of their game after their win against UWC, they were relieved to be back on the winning path after their defeat against TUT in the first round of the Varsity Football tournament.

The Tuks football team got its Varsity Football campaign back on track last week by beating the University of the Western Cape (UWC) 2-1 at home.

It is said that a win is a win; however, afterwards, the Tuks players were honest in their assessment of their on-field performance. Agreeing that they led things to slip somewhat during the second half’s play.

It was a game of two halves. Tuks dominated for the first 45 minutes creating countless scoring opportunities through tactical brilliance. Siphamandla Ntuli and Tobatsi Roets capitalised from it putting the ball into the back of the net to give Tuks a 2-0 lead at halftime.

But somehow during the second half, the Tuks players seemingly lost focus, allowing UWC to become more confident in the way they played. It led Stefan Stuurman scoring for UWC.

According to the Tuks head coach, Tlisane Motaung, he has got mixed feelings about his player’s performance.

“The positives are that we won and got three valuable points on the log. We not only created goal-scoring opportunities, but we scored two goals. Although personally, I think we should have scored more goals. My biggest concern is the way we played in the second half. We dropped the tempo and were not able to score,” said Motaung after the game.

His captain, Simbongile Njokwe, shares the coach’s concern.

“In spite of not playing to the best of our abilities, we got the result we needed, and that was important.  To be honest, I was not impressed with our approach to the game. We still missed out on far too many scoring opportunities. We also did not play with the same intensity we did last week against TUT,” said Njokwe.

The captain added that the team’s challenge needs to be to combine their desire to score with consistent good play over 90 minutes when they play against UJ this week.

Striker, Nhlanhla Mabaso, who came on as a replacement in the second half perhaps best summarised what lacked last week.

“We need to start and end a game playing with the same tempo and commitment. No team ever has the luxury of losing focus when it is in the lead,” he concluded.
