Young Pretoria golfer makes a national breakthrough

A junior upcoming golf star from Pretoria was recently included in the prestigious GolfRSA National Squad.

GolfRSA recently announced the addition of three new caps to the GolfRSA National Squad for the 2019/2020 season and a young rising star from Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool (Affies) is one of the young players who broke through on this level.

“We are excited to welcome Kyle de Beer from Eastern Province, Tyran Snyders from Western Province and Gauteng North’s Christiaan Maas into the fold. We work closely with the South African Golf Association Talent Development and Management Committee and these three players have been on our radar for a considerable time,” said GolfRSA CEO Grant Hepburn.

The GolfRSA National Squad, now in its fourth year, was set up with funding from businessman and GolfRSA chairman of the board Johann Rupert. The squad provides funding, support, advice, training camps and playing opportunities for the best of South Africa’s young golfing talent.

Hepburn said, given the departure of players like Deon Germishuys, Garrick Higgo, Wilco Nienaber and Matt Saulez to join the paid ranks this season, the performances of these young players made it possible to include them in the GolfRSA National Squad.

“We trust that this announcement will serve to encourage the other up-and-coming talent in South Africa,” Hepburn said.

Fifteen-year-old Maas is fast becoming another one of the exceptionally talented young golfers to break onto the national junior and Open Amateur stage, and showing the ability to compete on both levels.

“In his last five starts on the national junior circuit, Christiaan posted four top five finishes and won the Dimension Data Junior Open at Fancourt. He also enjoyed four top 15 finishes at Open Amateur level and broke into the top 20 in July with his runner-up finish in the Limpopo Open Stroke Play Championship,” Hepburn explained the inclusion of Maas.

These performances earned the young Affie learner a spot in the South African Under-16 group that will compete in the Reply Italian Under-16 Championship at the end of August.

Hepburn said they believe that with the guidance from within the squad and the continued coaching and mentorship of his coach Nico van Rensburg, Maas will continue to blossom on the golf course.

“The ultimate aim with the squad is to produce stronger national teams and provide individuals with the best preparation to be competitive golfers,” Hepburn concluded.
