Local stalwarts part of Proteas women’s cricket team for World Cup

Only two local stars made the Proteas women's cricket team for the coming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

Two local Northerns players were selected to join the Proteas Women’s cricket team for the coming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 in Australia.

Cricket South Africa last week announced a solid and experienced 15-player squad to represent the country at this prestigious tournament next month. The event will start on 21 February in Australia and end with the final on 8 March, which is also International Women’s Day.

“It’s a group that has the talent, experience and desire to help us win the T20 World Cup. The players we have at our disposal are some of the best and most promising players in women’s cricket globally and we will make sure that we give them the best tools to succeed on this big stage,” said head coach Hilton Moreeng.

The Proteas Women will open their pool campaign against England Women in Perth. Then follows games against Thailand Women, Pakistan Women and West Indies Women.

Local legend Mignon du Preez, South Africa’s most experienced women’s player and top batsman of all time, remains part of the team. The other local girl is the rising star and all-rounder, Sune Luus.

Team captain, Dané van Niekerk, also a former Pretoria girl who is now based in the Eastern Cape, makes a welcome return as captain after a lengthy period out on the side-lines with injury.

The South Africans are currently fourth in the International Cricket Council’s official rankings.
