Titans achieve first victory in Momentum One-Day Cup tournament after disappointing start

After two defeats on their home turf in Centurion, Heinrich Klaasen and his Titans team on Sunday in Port Elizabeth finally managed to secure their first victory in the Momentum One-Day Cup tournament.

The Titans finally scored their first victory in the Momentum One-Day Cup on Sunday in Port Elizabeth, and managed to elevate themselves out of last place on the standings.

The men in pale blue disappointed their loyal supporters, who showed up to at SuperSport Park to support them despite earlier thunderstorms in Pretoria, when they received a thorough five-wicket hiding from the Dolphins on Friday.

They batted boldly right the way through with everyone getting runs in front of their home fans – the pick of the batsmen being an unbeaten Dean Elgar from 74 (67 balls) and Grant Thomson’s 68 (60 balls). Heinrich Klaasen also lambasted 40 off 20 balls.

But after a break due to rain and dangerous lightning, the game was shortened to 39 overs per team and eventually the Dolphins had to chase a total of 284 according to the Duckworth & Lewis formula, after the home team scored 275/4.

It left the Dolphins chasing the game right from the get-go of their innings, with Sarel Erwee (38) and Grant Roelofsen (147*) taking the challenge head on. They put on 69 in just over 10 overs, before the former departed.

Eventually Roelofsen partnered with others like Vaughn van Jaarsveld (18).  Marques Ackerman (6),

Khaya Zondo (39) and Robbie Frylinck (21) to help secure an unexpected win.

– On Sunday in Port Elizabeth Dayyaan Galiem starred with the ball and Tony de Zorzi with the bat as the Titans finally won their first match of the season in this tournament with a comfortable five-wicket bonus-point victory over the Warriors.

All-rounder Galiem led the way with 4/27 in an impressive 10 overs to help restrict the hosts to 233 for eight.

Eddie Moore (103) recorded a third ton for the Warriors and Rudi Second (51) hit a half-century, but the pair lacked support after their side lost the toss and were put into bat.

Opener De Zorzi then flayed 98 off 104 balls as the visitors coasted to their target with a massive 68 balls to spare.

The Titans were full value for the win at St George’s Park, controlling the game for most parts, except for when Moore and Second were together.

The visitors’ chase revolved around De Zorzi. His innings allowed the others to play more freely around him with useful contributions coming from his partners.

Henry Davids made 21, Grant Thomson hit 23, Dean Elgar (24), Heinrich Klaasen (27) and Farhaan Behardien (31*) all chipped in with run-a-ball knocks to seal what proved to be an easy win.
