Big future predicted for versatile young sportsman from Pretoria North

Although a gifted sportsman from the north of Pretoria this year has already achieved exceptional achievements on the golf course, the athletics track and in the swimming pool, he could have reached even greater heights if the Covid-19 crisis had not struck.

Apart from the fact that Dylan McMaster is making a name for himself as athlete at Fortis Pretoria North Athletics Club’s, his achievements do not stop at his performances on the athletics track.

McMaster, who has been a member of Fortis Pretoria North throughout his primary school and high school career, is an extremely versatile athlete. He excelled at various school related sports including Golf, Swimming, Cross country and Athletics.

As an athlete, this young star set new records for four consecutive years (2016 to 2019) during his high school’s inter house athletics events. Some of these records stood for more than 30 years.

But he’s more than just an athlete and as an all-rounder sportsman he performed on provincial level in athletics, cross country, swimming (NTS Level 2) and Golf for Gauteng North. In his primary and secondary school career, he was awarded the title of Sports boy of the Year four times and Tshwane West Sportsman of the Year twice.

As a matric student Dylan made the most of his 2020 schools sport season, although it lasted barely three months. He medalled in both his inter high swimming gala items (backstroke & breaststroke) and inter high athletics track items (800m & 400m). He also qualified for the 800m final in the Gauteng Championships that was held early in March at Ruimsig, where he eventually achieved an overall 8th place among u/20 athletes.

McMaster also qualified for the 400m final in the Gauteng North Championships that was held in mid-March 2020. He achieved an overall 6th place in the final, again in the u.20 category.

Although he competed in an age group older than his age, his performance placed him in the top 10 athletes for Gauteng Championships as well as the Gauteng-North Championships for 2020.

McMaster wrapped up his high school athletics career on a high note when he was awarded the prestigious “Best Secondary Sportsman of the year for Tshwane West” at the Tshwane West District Excellence in School Sport awards held at the end of January this year.

Sadly, the COVID19 pandemic caused the cancelation of all sports events for 2020 and prevented McMaster along with many other athletes from excelling in their Matric year. Even so, as one of Fortis Pretoria North Captains, he continues to set an example by maintaining a positive attitude and training as hard as ever during the lockdown period.
