Music star supports SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge to root out gender-based violence

One of South Africa's emerging music stars' seriousness about the fight against Gender Based Violence got her involved with the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge.

Lucille Slade, one of the rising stars in South African music has given her support to the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge on 26 September 2020 to create a greater awareness around gender-based violence. Slade has her sights set high. She first caught the ear with her widely acclaimed cover of Cassper Nyovest’s track “Tito Mboweni”. The following year she released her debut album “scratch the Surface” and went on to share gems like “Velvet” and “Khuluma Numi”, having worked with Emmy award winning producer Evoke on the latter. Slade doesn’t confine her talents to one genre, although she’s primarily seen as an R&B pop singer. “Most of my songs are about girls – girls and their relationships. Girls trying to figure out the different stages of their relationship – when you’re in it, when you are over it, when you are ready to move on,” said Slade. Although music is her main interest, Slade is also a successful actress, having made her debut on “Binnelanders” and now appearing in the ever-popular “Sewende Laan.” Because of her interest in girls and their relationships, Slade is particularly concerned about gender-based violence (GBV) and is determined to do what she can to root it out. “There has never been a more urgent time to hold people accountable and to make sure out system protects its victims. Violence towards women is not acceptable. Women are not safe, and we can no longer just say “sorry”. Our system must take actions and show that these lives are valuable. No-one should ever feel protected when they harm women and children. Our system needs to protect our women,” she commented. SPAR recently announced the sold-out tickets of the Virtual Challenge. Entries will help SPAR donate food parcels to 30 000 gender-based violence survivors. On September 26, participants are encouraged to run, jog or walk a distance of their choice on a route of their choice and to share their experience on social media, using the hashtags #BeTheSunshine #SPARVirtualChallenge. Slade is one of the event ambassadors and is excited to be associated with the Virtual Challenge, which has attracted 30 000 entries. “I am so excited and honoured to be part of an initiative that brings women together to build a healthy active community through SPAR, even on a virtual basis. The more women who enter, the better,” Slade concluded. Participants will now be able to collect their packs at their selected SPAR store from 14 to 25 September 2020. Remember to take your ticket with when collecting your pack.
