Swimming community praises selfless service by Hillcrest staff

Thanks to the selfless service of municipal staff at the Hillcrest swimming pool in Pretoria, several members of swimming clubs were able to start preparing themselves for the swimming season despite the inconvenience of Covid-19 safety measures.

While the coronavirus pandemic has upended life for nearly everyone, healthcare workers, first responders and other essential workers have had to face more risks than most.

There were also the people who, in the later stages of the lockdown, were unselfishly willing to perform public services so that the lives of others could slowly but surely return to normal.

The pool superintendent at the Hillcrest municipal swimming pool in Pretoria, Abel Mokhonoana, and his team of workers are among those in this category.

To the great joy and gratitude of the competitive swimming community, Mokhonoana and his team agreed to continue to provide their service since the day that the regulations made it possible for swimmers to practice again. They have insured that the pool is heated, cleaned and ready for the swimmers to train.

This unselfish action has allowed swimming clubs, registered with Swimming South Africa, to return to training under strict COVID-19 rules and regulations. There are currently seven clubs using the facility.

A spokesperson for the Pretoria swimming community recently told Rekord that they owe a big thank you to Mokhonoana and his team, because through their willingness to provide these essential services, swimmers were able to start training again during a period of great frustration.
