Blue Bulls finish top of Currie Cup log for the first time in 15 years

The Blue Bulls will take on the Lions in the Currie Cup semi-final on Saturday 23 January at Loftus Versfeld.

It looks like the arrival of the Blue Bulls’ new director of rugby, Jake White, has brought good times for the new decade ahead for the Blue Bulls.

The pride of Pretoria has for the first time since 2005 managed to finish at the very top of the log in the Currie Cup series.

After winning the SuperRugby Unlocked tournament earlier this season, the Blue Bulls sealed the top spot on the standings last week Wednesday for a home semi-final and pole position for a home final when they defeated the Lions 22-15 in Pretoria

These two sides will meet again in a repeat of this encounter in the semi-final on 23 January.

On Sunday in Nelspruit, the Phakisa Pumas defeated log leaders 44-14 at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit to finish their Carling Currie Cup on a high note on Sunday afternoon. However, White used the match in the Lowveld to give several young players and other candidates a chance to gain experience at Currie Cup level, while resting most of his first-choice players.

Following completion of the round-robin phase, the Bulls finished top of the standings on 39 points with Western Province in second spot on 37, followed by the Sharks (35) and Lions (34).

In the meantime, COVID-19 precautionary measures have triggered the adjustment of the Carling Currie Cup playoff dates, with both semi-finals and the final now scheduled for a week later than initially planned. The change is to ensure tournament integrity and allow the participants to manage COVID-19 challenges.

The Carling Currie Cup final has been moved to Saturday, 30 January, with the two semi-finals scheduled for the previous weekend – when the Bulls will host the Lions in Pretoria, and Western Province taking on the Sharks in Cape Town – with both matches on Saturday, 23 January.
