Only one hurdle left for Jake White’s troops on their way to Currie Cup glory

The Blue Bulls on Saturday overcame an early second-half fightback by the Lions in a thrilling Carling Currie Cup semi-final at their fortress, Loftus Versfeld, and therefore they will host the first final of this competition since 2009.

Jake White’s Blue Bulls team has the opportunity to break their longest Currie Cup drought in the union’s history this coming Saturday at Loftus Versfeld, when they will face the Sharks at Loftus Versfeld in the final.

The Blue Bulls will host the Sharks in the first Carling Currie Cup final at Loftus Versfeld since 2009 after the teams held their nerve in testing semi-finals on Saturday to be the last sides standing.

The last time these two teams met in the final was in 2008, with the Sharks clinching the coveted gold trophy with a 14-9 victory in Durban.

Table-topping Bulls guaranteed their home final with a 26-21 victory against the Lions in the first semi-final in Pretoria. In the process, the Blue Bulls overcame an early second-half fightback by the Lions in this thrilling game.

Since the last time the Blue Bulls managed to win the Currie Cup, when they beat the Cheetahs 36-24 at Loftus Versfeld in 2009, the men in Light Blue have only been able to qualify for the final once. However, that year – 2016 – they were overwhelmed by the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein with a score of 36-16.

The decade between 2010 and 2019 is now known as the Blue Bulls’ longest period ever without the coveted golden cup in the trophy cabinet. Jake White’s troops will definitely want to break this drought this coming Saturday.
