TUT Vikings crush Rhodes but miss out on spot in Varsity Shield final

TUT is currently experiencing their best season in years in the Varsity Shield competition and with their excellent performance on Tuesday against Rhodes University, the Vikings have ensured that they will finish third on the log.

The TUT Vikings on Tuesday scored ten tries to give Rhodes University a proper thrashing in the Varsity Shield tournament, which currently takes place in Pretoria.

The TUT Vikings overcame a slow start but eventually won by 64-6.

The Vikings got their fourth win in five matches keeping their hopes of reaching the final alive. However, they would be extinguished a couple of hours later when the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) beat the Cape Peninsular University of Technology (CPUT).

This means that the latter two teams will advance to the final, no matter what happens in the last round of the league phase. Even if TUT’s Vikings manage to beat WSU in their last league match, they will not be able to overtake this team or CPUT on the log.

On the plus side, none of the teams below TUT will be able to catch up with them on the log, which means they will finish third – their best position in more than five years.

Although Rhodes took a 6-0 lead early in the game after two penalty goals from flyhalf Matthew Royle, the TUT Vikings took control of the game from there onwards.

At half time the led by 12-6 after two tries, but in the second half it was a totally different story.

Another eight tries later and Rhodes had to leave the field with their tails between his legs.
