Tuks qualifies for Varsity Cup semi-final with huge victory over Madibaz
Nico Luus' Tuks team made sure on Thursday that they will advance to the play-off rounds of the 2021 Varsity Cup tournament when they gave the Madibaz of the Eastern Cape a decent hiding in their second last league match of the series.
Tuks reached the goal line eleven times in their second last Varsity Cup league match on Thursday to beat the Madibaz of Port Elizabeth 75-0.
With that, they also made sure to qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament, as they could not finish lower than fourth on the log.
Captain Sango Xamlashe and fullback Zander du Plessis powered Tuks to an impressive win against a deflated Madibaz side at the Tuks B-field.
Hooker Llewellyn Classen also made his mark, coming off the bench to score a second-half hat-trick as Tuks finished with 11 tries.
Tuks drew first blood through winger Tharquinn Manuel, who dived over in the corner. Xamlashe then ran in the first point-of-origin try of the game, with Du Plessis adding a conversion and then scoring a try of his own.
Tuks’ rampage continued when prop Cebolenkosi Dlamini powered through the Madibaz defence, and Xamlashe and Du Plessis both earned their second tries to make it 44-0 at half-time.
Discipline cost both teams towards the end of the first half when prop Damien Swartz was yellow-carded for Tuks, followed shortly afterwards by his opposite number, Le-Kleu Stokes, for a no-arms tackle in the build-up to Du Plessis’ second try.
Both Tuks hookers added to the try tally by bullying their way over the line to take their team past the 50-point mark.
The hosts then scored their third point-of-origin try through winger Tharquinn Manuel after a great individual effort from scrumhalf Clyde Lewis, before Classen crossed the line twice late in the game to complete his hat-trick.
The result sees the tournament hosts remain in second place on the log. Their last league fixture is against the dangerous team from the Central University of Technology (CUT), which is also still in the race to qualify for the play-off phase and is currently in fourth place.
With the leaders, the Ikeys, playing their last league game against the Madibaz, Tuks will not easily end up at the top of the log. If they beat CUT, they will finish second. Otherwise possibly third, if Maties manages to win their last game against the Shimlas and Tuks get stuck against the Bloemfontein men.
However, the chances are very good that Tuks will play against the Maties in the semi-final, whether they finish second or third.
