Griquas overwhelmed at Loftus as Blue Bulls move back to top of Currie Cup log

The Blue Bulls on Wednesday at Loftus Versfeld absorbed a huge attack from the dangerous team of Griquas quite easily and hit back with exciting rugby for a try festival and comfortable victory.

The Blue Bulls are back at the top of the Currie Cup log, after Wednesday night’s tough but exciting battle against Griquas, which yielded eleven tries and was won 56-33 by the home team

The impressive team from Griquas definitely travelled to Pretoria to surprise the Blue Bulls as well, as they have already done this season against all the other top unions in the Currie Cup tournament.

Unfortunately for the Peacock Blues, they faced the strongest team in the Currie Cup series on an evening when they felt like running rugby.

The men from Kimberley initially determined the pace and intensity of the match and before long they were six points ahead, after excellent goal kicking by their flyhalf, George Whitehead.

Johan Goosen opened the Blue Bulls’ account with a penalty goal, but shortly afterwards he intercepted a short pass between two Griquas players to score an odd try under the posts.

Goosen’s try was a turning point, because from there onwards the Griquas’ focus weakened and the Blue Bulls were able to score two more tries before half-time. Tries by Hooker Schalk Erasmus and left wing Kurt-Lee Ardendse were proof that the home team started to find their rhythm.

Despite a yellow card for Arendse, the Blue Bulls played positive rugby and in the second half and they scored a further five tries.

Although there has been one-way traffic at times during this game, the Peacock Blues are slowly but surely becoming everyone’s favourite second team with the way they currently play. They just never stop fighting. Under the brilliant leadership of one of South Africa’s most underrated rugby players, Ruan (Stoney) Steenkamp, the Griquas have established themselves in this Currie Cup tournament as a serious contender for a place in the semi-finals.

As for the Blue Bulls, they are still a work in progress, but it is clear that Jake White is building a group with depth and confidence that will not easily be dethroned as South Africa’s top provincial team.
