Athletics festival hosted for Pretoria’s home-school community
A very successful athletics day, in which about 500 athletes participated, was recently presented by the Home-schooling community of Pretoria.
The Home-school Community of Gauteng recently took to the field at Wonderboom Laerskool for their very own athletics day.
Previously these athletes had the opportunity to compete at an annual interprovincial event presented in Roodepoort in the Ruimsig stadium. This year, however, Gauteng’s home schoolers presented their own athletics event and the day started with the different teams doing their own war cries with much enthusiasm and a great sense of commitment.
The athletes were divided into four teams, which roughly represented four different regions of Gauteng. There was also a smaller team that represented some regions outside Gauteng.
A hefty group of almost 500 athletes registered to participate on the day, some of which had never participated in an organized athletic event before. Athletes competed in usual track and field events within their age groups.
Although the event was organized mainly for the purpose of an opportunity to participate, athletes also enjoyed the opportunity to show off their talents. There were some impressive results on the day.
Some of the outstanding achievements of local participants included the Kotze family, who have proven their talent properly. Hardus Kotze took first place in the 100m, 200m, 800m and long jump for boys u.15. This excellent talent clearly runs in the family, as his sister, SanMarie Kotze, took first place in the 80m, 100m and 200m sprints and the long jump for girls u.12.
Jano van Loggerenberg finished first in the shot put for boys under 11. Wian van Loggerenberg won the 100 and 200m, as well as the long jump, while he was second in hurdles.
There was also great fun at the end of the day, when the parents could participate in a friendly relay race. There was no lack of enthusiasm among these parents and they were loudly applauded by the children.
This event could not have taken place without the vision of Eben and Michelle Steyn who worked tirelessly for many weeks to ensure that proceedings went off as smoothly as possible. They were assisted by a group of parents, who eventually showed what the Home-schooling Community is capable of.
The organizers believe that this event will go from strength to strength and in the future may even produce a few sports stars.
