While major renovations are currently underway at the Forest Hill shopping centre in Centurion, the centre’s Ice Rink is available for skaters, as well as ice hockey events.

The Forest Hill Ice Rink is home to clubs such as the Forest Rats Ice Hockey Club, the Warriors Ice Hockey Club and the Vipers Ice Hockey Club.

As part of their Valentine’s weekend celebrations, the organizers of the centre’s ice hockey rink, in collaboration with the Gauteng Ice Hockey Association (GIHA), will participate in the famous and unique Global Girls’ Game, an initiative of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).

The initiative includes a weekend-long game between two women’s teams, called Team Blue and Team White, from 14 to 16 February, depending on where in the world it takes place. The action will start with a prologue in several countries and then on early Saturday in Australia before reaching Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and North, Central and South America.

In South Africa, the Forest Hill rink will participate in the initiative and the game will be played at 07:00 on Sunday morning 16 February.

As part of the fun of the event, a global scoreboard will be maintained, where Team Blue and Team White’s scores will be announced at the end of the weekend, after all the matches around the world have been completed.

Women’s ice hockey is one of the fastest growing sports in the world thanks to events like this one and similar programs that are being run in many countries.

This fun initiative is believed to be one of the best ways to convince girls to become part of this popular sport.
