Illegal dumping site in Danville

For more than a year, residents in Danville and Phillip Nel have been struggling with an illegal dumping site in Staatsartillerie Road. According to Ward Councillor Sam Moimane, he was aware of the problem as it had been ongoing.

“I can confirm that the Tshwane metro did clean the land in Staatsartillerie Road, but the problem is that the people in the community are the ones dumping there.”

Some residents raised their concerns over the health risk the dumping site was posing, because it smelt terrible and was home to hordes of rats.

“This dumping site is resulting in rats coming into our yards and the mosquitoes are also bad. One day, big snakes will come out from the rubble too if nothing is done about it,” a resident said.

Moimane said that they appealed to the residents who illegally dumped at the site to stop doing so and to take responsibility for their own environment.

Rekord has reported on the dumping site on a few occasions and the Tshwane metro had, at the time, responded by saying that they would consider putting up ‘no dumping’ signs, but these have not materialised. The rubble dumped is mainly building rubble, vehicle parts and garbage bags. Moimane said that he would talk to the relevant people at the Tshwane metro to have the place cleaned up and appeal to them again to erect a ‘no dumping’ sign.

He emphasised that they would only give the Tshwane metro one month to put up the sign and if they have not done so by the set date, 22 November, on 26 November the DA will put up a sign from their own funds. Ward Councillor Danny Swanepoel mentioned that this would be a constituency project where the DA and the community would come together to clean the area and erect the sign.
