New community centre for Elandspoort
The MLC community centre was recently opened in Elandspoort to help better the community.
A pleasant, new community centre was recently opened in Patriot Cresent in Elandspoort. According to Cathy van Rensburg, the co-ordinator of the centre, the centre came from the Winning Together outreach programme, which caters for 45 families, 15 elderly people and 120 children.
“Some of the parents are illiterate and some of the children do not do their homework when they get home and end up falling behind in their work.” Van Rensburg mentioned that the centre’s study hall, gym and couselling rooms would benefit the children greatly. “After doing their homework, the children get to exercise a bit and if they need to talk to counsellors, these are at their disposal.”
The MLC community centre was funded by MLC Helping Hands Ministries for the community and people that are disadvantaged in the community and are involved in the centre and its feeding scheme. “The centre was opened in September. It’s very welcoming and friendly, making one feel at home as soon as one enters the door,” DA Councillor, Danny Swanepoel told Rekord.
The centre has about 24 children that attend the venue in groups to exercise, do their homework or engage in various other activities. Van Rensburg shared that new programmes would be introduced soon to benefit mothers and children. The centre would help change many people’s lives, especially the youth who are constantly exposed to drugs and alcohol. “Drug and alcohol misuse is rife, and children are exposed to it often. Our attempt at a solution is for the youth to get involved in the gym and to talk to our counsellors,” Van Rensburg pointed out. The centre is open from Monday to Thursday, 14:00 until 18:00.
“This is the first centre built in Elandspoort. We are excited. This is a great initiative,” Swanepoel concluded.
