Thunderstorm wrecks houses
Thursday's thunderstorm damaged residents' properties in Westford's badly. In one incident, a massive tree fell on top of a house and collapsed the roof in, nearly killing the people inside.
Thursday evening’s hailstorm almost claimed the lives of six people and has caused a lot of damage to residents’ properties in Westford. Residents saw house windows broken, roof tiles damaged and trees falling on top of their roofs during the storm. In one incident, a tree fell onto the roof of a house in Westford and nearly claimed six people’s lives.
According to Richard Komape, the disaster happened while the people were sleeping at night during the storm.
“The huge pine tree was blown down by the heavy wind and nearly killed six people who were sleeping in the house.”
The corrugated iron roof was entirely damaged and the residents were left without a roof.
“A lot of damage has been done to our house, we do not know what to do. We have no alternative accommodation,” the resident, Nokuthula Moyo, said in distress.
Thabiso Mohlola, another resident, explained how the tree landed right above his head. “I almost died. The tree fell right over me and if I had not moved, it would have killed me. Things are difficult for us at the moment.”
Mohlola mentioned that they were in desperate need of assistance to get the house fixed.
Residents are now faced with the expenses of fixing the roof and other items in their homes that were damaged. Komape indicated that they were busy trying to get help for the family and removing the tree from on top of the house. Westford residents had to make plans to cover their houses as several windows were broken during the thunderstorm. They fear that if the storms continue in this manner that they will be left without roofs over their heads.
