Local school takes part in Nigerian campaign

The Suiderberg School played its part in the Nigerian ‘Bring back our girls’ campaign on Friday morning when the staff and pupils formed a structure of a girl.

According to Stephan Ferreira, a teacher at the school, the principal Raymond Loubser collaborated with the department of education on this initiative to make people aware of the plight of the abducted Nigerian girls.

“We embarked on this campaign today because we were asked to raise awareness about the ‘Bring back our girls’ campaign. We formed a girl structure at the assembly platform as part of the initiative,” Ferreira said.

Another teacher, Deirdre Gerber, said that it was actually interesting to see how much the pupils knew about the campaign.

“The purpose was, however, to raise awareness among our pupils so that they can share it at home with their families. We also wanted to demonstrate that children have rights and that we care about them and their safety.”

Gerber also mentioned that Louise Janse van Rensburg, Odette Olivier and a couple of other pupils assisted in organising the campaign. The whole school, however, took part in forming the structure of a girl.

Ferreira said that the teachers also decided to wear red as part of the initiative.

The school’s aim with this initiative was to raise awareness and to show that they, along with the nation, care about the fate of the Nigerian girls.
