Steam Train club hosts open day
Friends of the Rail club is hosting an Open day to give the public a Steam Train experience and to raise funds to maintain the trains.
For the love of steam trains, Friends of the Rail, Pretoria’s own Steam Train Club, is hosting a family day to give the community an experience of a life-time.
Friends of the Rail Club is a non-profit organisation and they are hosting an open day to raise money to maintain the train.
“The club has been in existence for 28 years. We are volunteers and we want to give the public the opportunity to ride on a steam train. You find people that are motorbike lovers and others are vehicle lovers, we are just a group of steam train lovers,” chairperson of the club, Nathan Berelowitz said.
He said that the money they make on the day will go towards maintaining the trains.
“We host the event every year. There will be a lot of activities like jumping castles, horse riding, go-carting and many more, to keep people entertained. We want the community to support us and experience riding on a steam train,” Berelowitz added.
There are trips on Monday, 16 June and Sunday, 6 July that go to Cullinan for the day. On the day of the event the public will have an opportunity to ride around Pretoria.
“For the train ride around Pretoria on the day of the event, residents need to book and there will be a fee charged for the ride. The ride takes place at 14:00 in the afternoon,” Berelowitz indicated.
He said the entrance fee of the event on 6 July is R10 for adults and R5 for children under 12 years. He made it clear that for the train ride around Pretoria there will be a separate fee charged.
The event is taking place on Sunday, 6 July from 10:00 until 15:00 in the afternoon. Departure is at the steam train depot in Hermanstad on the corner of Miechealson and Kruger streets.
On Monday 16 June, Youth Day, there will be a steam train ride to Cullinan.
