Steve Biko Road is known for its drag races and constant speeding. It has claimed many lives in the past and although racing has been eradicated on most parts of Steve Biko Road, accidents are still a major concern.
A woman was run over by an ambulance service as she was crossing Steve Biko Road on 28 July this year.
An emergency vehicle from Lifecare ambulance services was en route to an emergency scene when it swerved to avoid hitting another vehicle and accidentally hit the pedestrian. The critically injured woman was treated on the scene and transported to a nearby hospital.
Three died and two others were injured when a driver lost control of his vehicle in a separate incident and crashed into a concrete pole in Steve Biko Road.
At the time of the accident police were unclear as to how the driver lost control.
Warrant Officer Wanda Olivier said street racing was a problem a few years ago, but through visible policing it had been eradicated.
“There have been a lot of accidents on Steve Biko Road over the years, and while we cannot contribute all of them to street racing, this did play a role. It is a dangerous street and motorists are advised to drive cautiously when they are using this road,” Olivier warned.
