Heritage Day: Zulu South Africans

South Africa celebrates National Heritage Day on 24 September 2015. We are a proud Rainbow Nation with 11 official languages across our beautiful country, and today we take a look at all our unique cultures that make us one of the most diverse countries in the world.

The Zulu are an ethnic group of Southern Africa and the largest ethnic group in South Africa, with an estimated 10 to 13 million people living mainly in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Small numbers also live in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique.

Their language, IsiZulu, is part of the Nguni subgroup.

Population: 12 159 000 (2011 Census)

Language: IsiZulu, Xhosa, SiSwati.

Famous Zulu South Africans: Jacob Zuma, Jeff Radebe, Lucas Radebe, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

Traditional attire: Zulus wear a variety of attire, both traditional for ceremonial or culturally celebratory occasions, and modern westernised clothing for everyday use. The women dress differently depending on whether they are single, engaged, or married.

Region where Zulu South Africans live: Mainly KwaZulu-Natal and some are also scattered throughout other provinces.
