Grief and sadness over officer’s death

Law enforcement officials send their condolences to fallen Bull security officer JP van Niekerk.

An outpouring of grief and sadness has greeted the death of a security officer in a burglary attempt in Elardus Park early on Tuesday.

“It is a very sad morning at Bull Security,” his employer said in a statement.

“We lost a soldier, a true hero, a legend that sacrificed his life for others.”

Response officer JP van Niekerk was shot in an armed robbery at a complex and died on the scene.

“Our other officer, Neil Botha, managed to shoot and kill one suspect and wound the other one. JP Van Niekerk, you will be missed. A true hero to our community.”

The company said Van Niekerk would be sorely missed.

“Your place is empty. Remember you will always be in our hearts. Our condolences to his family in this difficult time. Rest in peace, our hero!”

Former Hi Risk security Marcé Bester also offered condolences to Van Niekerk’s family.

“Thank you to each and every law enforcement member out there that is keeping the community safe,” said Bester.

Garsfontein police spokesperson Warrant Dave Miller described Van Niekerk’s death as tragic, saying the police were in constant contact with security personnel.

“This is an unfortunate incident and it really feels like losing one of our own,” said Miller.

Directorate of Specialized Security’s Brandon Morgan offered condolences to Van Niekerk’s family and the Bull security community.

Lyttelton police spokesperson officer Warrant Officer Gumbu said police would investigate every possible lead to ensure that the culprits end up behind bars.
