A new tallest building for South Africa

South Africa has a new tallest building. The Leonardo that’s steadily rising above Sandton’s skyline is now taller than the Carlton Centre, which has been SA’s tallest skyscraper.

According to a BusinessTech article, the tall skyscraper above Sandton’s skyline will become the tallest building in the country. This was confirmed by Bart Dorrestein, Legacy Group CEO, during his interview with Moneyweb.

The tall building, the Leonardo, will have 50 floors and is set to reach 220 metres. Dorrestein said the group intentionally chose not to announce the plan to make the tallest skyscraper in South Africa. They wanted the extremely tall building to speak for itself. He confirmed that the decision to expand the building beyond 50 floors was taken in September 2018. Once complete the final build height of The Leonardo is now expected to reach 230 metres.

The building is valued at R3 million and is a development that will be used for a variety of projects. It will offer luxury residential units in the form of apartments and penthouse suites, as well as more than 15,000 square metres of premium office space.

The building will also include a business and conference centre and other amenities, that include a gym and spa, restaurants and a lifestyle and recreation zone. “We believe that The Leonardo will be the most technologically advanced, environmentally friendly building on the continent. That has certainly been the thinking behind the planning and development of the property,” Legacy said.

The building is set to be completed in 2019. And according to BusinessTech, while the building will be the highest skyscraper in South Africa and Africa once it’s completed, it will only hold that title for a short duration, as Kenya has plans to build the tallest building in Africa within the next three years.
