For travellers on a specific budget, the self-catering rest camps are the best choice. These camps are positioned in good game viewing areas of the Kruger and although most accommodations have the basic amenities, they are comfortable and offer flexibility – particularly for families who are travelling with younger children.

Shingwedzi Rest Camp nestles in the northern reaches of the Kruger in a remote area not often considered by many for a safari. It is for this reason that Shingwedzi can be dubbed a more exclusive camp that during peak season won’t be as crowded as most camps in the southern reaches of the Kruger. Set on the banks of the Shingwedzi River, the camp boasts spectacular views and a wide selection of accommodation options. The camp is well-equipped with a restaurant, cafeteria, grocery shop, laundromat, petrol station, swimming pool, cutlery and plates hamper, and a picnic area. Guests can book guided bush walks and game drives that seek out the famous Big Five and other animal unique species.

Skukuza Rest Camp is regarded as one of the easiest camps to access from various locations in the Lowveld. Nested on the Sabie River, Skukuza Rest Camp is a great base from which to seek out the Big Five, with the area surrounding the camp seeing regular sightings of lion and wild dog. Skukuza is the largest camp in the Kruger, boasting a wide range of accommodation options – from camping to semi-luxury cottages. It is a great base from which to seek out the Big Five. The camp is very popular so it does tend to book out quickly and can become crowded during the peak periods of the year. The facilities at Skukuza are also some of the best, with a post office, bank, car hire office, restaurant, deli, grocery shop, laundromat, fuel station, garage with workshop, auditorium and conference venues, picnic area, car wash, and two swimming pools.

Satara Rest Camp is one of the most popular camps in the Kruger, positioned in the southernmost region of the park. The camp boasts two and three bedroomed units, a restaurant and deli, a swimming pool and several play areas; making it the ideal destination for families. Satara is well-known for its big cat sightings and boasts large herds of buffalo. There are also several waterholes and dams that are home to a number of hippo and crocodile. The camp activities include guided bush walks and game drives, a wilderness trail, two bird hides, and a 4×4 adventure trail.
