Mopani Camp -The Kruger’s Best Kept Secret

The bungalows at Mopani overlooks a large area of undisturbed mopane bushveld in the centre of the camp.

Mopani Rest Camp nestles approximately 70 kilometres from the Phalaborwa Gate and is one of the largest camps in the northern Kruger Park. The camp has a low-footprint and is the perfect place for those looking to truly immerse themselves in nature.

The bungalows at Mopani overlooks a large area of undisturbed mopane bushveld in the centre of the camp. The self-contained stone and thatch bungalows have an unusual elongated shape, offering more space than the rondavel shaped chalets found in many of the other Kruger camps. These bungalows can sleep four to six people – a great option for families and friends.

The dining experience at Mopani is a real treat as the menu differs from other camps in the Kruger. The Tindlovo Restaurant caters for breakfast, lunch and dinner; and offers anything from pizzas to waffles and salads. You can choose to dine outside on the deck that overlooks the dam or enjoy the views from the large windows of the beautiful dining room. The camp also boasts a sparkling swimming pool and a shop that stocks all the necessities, including nice pieces of meat that can be braaied to perfection.

The Big 5 are present in the area surrounding Mopani but not in high numbers as you would see further south. It just means that you need to look a little harder but you are sure to see lion and leopard who are frequently seen in the area, along with big herds of wildebeest and zebra who love to hang around the dam and waterholes. Buffalo and elephant are also often seen close to camp. The Pioneer and Shipandane Bird Hides are great for travelers who have a keen interest in birds, with over 280 bird species found in the northern parts of the Kruger. The Shipandane Hide is also used for overnight safari experiences; with fold-out beds, a bathroom and braai facilities.

The Kruger can be explored independently but if you are looking for that true safari experience then the camp offers guided morning, sunset and night drives in open safari vehicles. There is also the option to enjoy guided bush walks, an in-camp trail walk, visits to the Tropic of Capricorn which is located 12 kilometres north of the camp, and outdoor dining experiences.
