Pretorian DJ passionate about spinning the decks

The versatile house DJ and producer has been playing in all parts of the country.

The clubs may have shut down due to the lockdown but that has not stopped local house DJ and producer Andreas Tobias from living his dreams.

He said that he was not really affected by the lockdown as he was still able to entertain people in the comfort of their homes.

“I have an online show called NeonLightSessions for hip-hop heads and the Dinho Cafe Amapiano on Fridays. I created the project to keep fellow citizens entertained during the lockdown and nothing has changed.”

He has signed under record label called Distinct Music.

In the journey of his music career, Tobias has graced the stage with several professional and talented musicians such as the likes of Lamiez, Dihno, Snowdeep and Micks.

He said his passion for music grew when he was 16-years-old.

“The inspiration set a foundation for Tobias’ ears to good music, I learnt how to DJ at the age of 16, using Atomix and virtual DJ in my backroom in the township of Mabopane until I met Bra Abie who introduced me to CDJ and there I began my professional DJ career,” said Tobias.

“I have a passion for making and producing music, as well as the understanding of the behind-the-scenes part of it. I am aware that there are a lot of DJs but they have a lot of listeners who enjoy a wide variety of good music.

“As a DJ, I think it’s more about getting to know yourself first, understanding what your audience likes and knowing your music. I like listening to other DJs before I play my set, it helps me get an understanding of my audience,” said Tobias.

He said he liked to play his own music which has not yet been released. “I find my music special because people get to exclusively enjoy the music not knowing the person who made it.”

The 31-year-old told Rekord that he was mentoring his younger siblings to follow his steps.

“It is important to spend time teaching the younger generations and passing down the torch to them for they are the future after all,” said Tobias adding he would like to have a school for DJs in the next five years.

“I would, especially like to be able to help those unable to afford higher education due to finances. Of course, it would not yet be possible for me to do it all completely for free because unfortunately, bills do need to get paid but I would like to be able to subsidise rising stars in a meaningful way,” said Tobias.

He said he would like to sponsor those who were unemployed and register them with his company for photo, video shoots, profiles and events.

” I am a firm believer that it is healthy for a person to be interested in more than one thing in life.

“Currently, I run a studio that produces music and other visual productions like video and photography,” he said.
