Local youngsters challenge others to clean up
For Xander (9), and his cousin, Zoé (10), it was just not acceptable for certain areas of the Moot to be covered in litter.

Two determined and hardworking primary school learners from the Moot took it upon themselves to clean up parts of the area.
For Xander Bezuidenhoudt (9), and his cousin, Zoé Stoltz (10), it was just not acceptable that certain areas of the Moot are strewn with litter, said Xander’s mother, Debbie.
“My husband and I decided last Tuesday [9 June] to go for a walk with the children,” said Debbie.
“The lockdown has been so long, and we believe that a healthy body houses a healthy spirit.”
On the day, these two grade 4 and 5 learners of Laerskool Villieria climbed the mountain with their family.
“It was actually for exercise, but we were also armed with garbage bags to pick up garbage along the way,” said Debbie.
“It was a great surprise to see how much rubbish was scattered around from the bottom to the top of the mountain.”
She said the mountain they climbed was the one opposite Mayville Mall in Suiderberg.

“We each had a backpack with refreshments,” she said.
She said they walked for more than five hours, picking up rubbish along the way.
“When we got home at dusk, the children decided to challenge all Moot residents to clean up,” she said.
They called it the “cleaning lockdown challenge”, Debbie said.
“My husband immediately had to tell the sector police about the challenge which they accepted and placed it on their WhatsApp chat group,” she said.
“Xander, who is very outspoken, had to immediately tell his Sensei, Sensei Francois of the Kaimoku Karate Club about the challenge.
“The Kaimoku Karate Club also accepted the challenge and there are big plans for Saturday morning to clean up the area again.”
She said this cleaning session will take place this week in Denyssen Avenue as well as along the Apies River.
