Varsity College uplifts north children’s home

More than 100 items of canned food and clothing were donated to the centre which assists about 300 children from its community.

Varsity College (VC) Pretoria donated food and clothing to the Kgmotso Children’s centre in block NN in Soshanguve this week.

Making a difference in the community even during the national lockdown is important to the IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria, said VC Student Relations Manager Refilwe Maakamedi.

She said more than 100 items of canned food and clothing were donated to the centre which assists about 300 children from its community with homework. The centre provides extra mural activities, meals and a safe space for them as well.

“The tins of canned food were collected at the movie night during orientation week (O’Week) by the social committee to assist VC Cares (the student volunteer body) with their food drive. Earlier in the year, VC Cares with the help of the students on campus, prepared about 200 sandwiches to feed the children at the centre as well,” said Maakamedi.

Varsity College said more food drives would continue throughout the year targeting underprivileged areas.

“The Covid-19 impact on the economy and food insecurity will very likely last for at least 18 to 24 months. With this in mind, we will continue with a food drive throughout the year. The drive currently uses WhatsApps to ask student groups to please bring food and clothing to campus when they attend their respective academic boot camps (catch up sessions).

“VC Cares is determined to eventually feed as many of the Kgomotso Children’s centre’s children as possible, and on an ongoing basis.”

The IIE’s Varsity College also aims to instil a sense of citizenship and social responsibility in its students.

The VC Cares committee gives its members the opportunity to lead fellow students through initiatives like the food drive.

“My staff and all the children are very grateful for the Pretoria campus and its students for their continuous support,” said centre manager Nyalungo Kgmotso.
