Body of a Jakaranda shopping centre construction worker recovered after collapse

“The K9 team also held a search to see if there were any more bodies on-site, and they did not detect anything.” Tshwane

The body of a 46-year-old man was recovered at the Jakaranda shopping centre after a part of the building collapsed on Thursday morning.

Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso said the body was recovered after a rescue team conducted a “rapid recovery’’ at the collapsed building.

He reported that the man’s body has since been removed and his family would be notified of the incident.

“The police K9 team also searched to see whether there were any more bodies on-site and they did not find anything. With this, and the roll call of employees, everyone was accounted for.”

The SAPS and labour department were expected to further investigate the incident.

Ten people sustained slight injuries and four sustained serious injuries. Only employees were injured in the collapse, Mabaso said.

All the injured people were taken to Muelmed and Pretoria West hospitals for emergency care.

Heidi Schutte, a resident who lives nearby, told Rekord she heard “something rumbling a bit and then suddenly a huge rumble”.

“I thought that something was collapsing. When I came out, I saw that part of the shopping centre under construction had collapsed.”

According to police, the incident happened at around 11:30. The cause of the structure collapse remains unknown.

Meanwhile, the centre’s management said they would revert to Rekord once they had more information.
