Friend gives heartfelt tribute to couple slain in home near Pretoria

The couple was shot and killed in their home during a robbery while their daughter sustained serious injuries.

A friend of the couple that was murdered in their Fly Inn Estate home, near Pretoria, paid a heartfelt tribute to them on Wednesday.

“My beautiful friends Janique and Wayne Giles, my heart breaks…Such a senseless tragedy. Why, is all I can ask – why,” said Karen Pringle.

Pringle said she met the couple in the 1980s when she was 19

They lived in the same block of flats.

“The first time I met Janique standing at the lift I just knew I had to be friends with this girl,” she said, adding that they started chatting on a day when they were walking to work one day and their friendship over the years grew.

“She was my go to person, my mentor, my tell-it-like-it-is no nonsense friend, so full of wisdom,” she said.

Pringle said she would miss their endless chats.

“Getting to know Wayne was another story,” she recalled, explaining that although they were at loggerheads at times, she adored him.

“Wayne had a wacky dry sense of humour and a heart of gold. He was a strong, dedicated and determined husband and father.”

She further said the couple’s children have lost “two beautiful souls” and her heart went out to them.

“I hope and pray their journey home was a beautiful one and that they are shining their light on their loved ones,” Pringle said.

On social media Caron Mather Pharoah said: “So, so devastated cannot believe these two beautiful people have been taken from us so tragically.”

Meanwhile, Michelle Scheepers conveyed her condolences to Rachel.

“Thinking of you. I’m so sorry for your loss. Praying for you.”

The 56-year-old woman and her 57-year-old husband were shot and killed by robbers on Tuesday.

The couple’s daughter, who was also shot during the Elandsfontein home invasion, was airlifted to hospital for urgent medical attention.

Her brother, Brandon (28) was said to have found his father downstairs while his mother and sister were upstairs when he woke up to gunshots.

Wayne was found with gunshot wounds to the upper body.

The Fly Inn Estate manager, who refused to divulge his name to Rekord, said he could not comment.

“There’s an investigation with the crime investigation unit,” he said.

Items which were reportedly stolen from the home included a television set, two MacBooks and another laptop.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters said they were investigating a case of murder, attempted murder and house robbery.

“No suspects have been arrested.”

Peters added that police were appealing to anyone who could have information which could lead to the arrest of the suspects to either contact their nearest police station or call Crime Stop on 08600-10111.
