First award for young Lim musician
“When I started in music, I did not know it was to be a lifelong career," says the young star who was surprised to win at the recent SATMAs
LIMPOPO – Lwamondo-born musician, Tshanduko Maano did the province proud at the recent South African Traditional Music Awards (SATMA) that took place in Richards Bay recently.
Tshanduko, known to many as Mazwale, won the best Tshivenda album award.
The 20-year-old made a name for herself when she first started recording songs with 5Dot5 Studio in Gauteng in 2014. Her second album, Usapfa hutunya mavhudzi, is doing well at the moment.
She started singing in primary school in the choir, and later became the lead vocalist at the church she attended. Her first album, Ndinne Uno, was released in 2014, with hit praise songs such as Ndwinwana wanga and the title track, Ndinne Uno gaining much appreciation.
“When I started in music, I did not know it was to be a lifelong career. I think it is a sign that I am doing a good job as I sing what is relevant to people’s lives, something that empowers them.”
This is Mazwale’s first award.
“I tried to work with different producers to avoid creating the same sounds and level of quality every time. This is the criticism that local in-house artists have received,” she says.
She encourages young people to realise the importance of education.
She is currently in her second year studying toward a diploma in sound engineering at Damelin College. She thanks the supporters who voted for her and dedicated the award to those who have always supported her.
