July fuel cuts may put more money back in your pocket

With household budgets under pressure, motorists are eagerly awaiting confirmation of what could be a welcome financial break.

POLOKWANE – Motorists could be in line for significant relief at the pumps in July, with the latest fuel price projections pointing to decreases of more than R1.00 per litre for petrol.

While the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) has not yet announced the official July fuel price adjustment, recent data published by the Central Energy Fund indicates substantial over-recoveries for both petrol and diesel.

According to fuel price projections based on late-June data, petrol prices could decrease by between R1.32 and R1.37 per litre, while diesel could drop by as much as R2.57 per litre.

The projected decreases follow a sharp decline in international oil prices during June, coupled with a relatively stable rand. Analysts say these factors have contributed to sizeable over-recoveries in the fuel price calculation.

Motorists are, however, urged to treat the figures as preliminary.

Fuel price projections can change before the month-end calculation is finalised, and the official adjustment will only be confirmed by the DMPR.

A quick reader poll conducted by Review Online this week found that some respondents are optimistic about the prospect of lower fuel prices, while most say that while the price drop is helpful, it is still not enough.

While the official July fuel price adjustment is yet to be announced, several readers expressed hope that a decrease at the pumps could help ease pressure on monthly budgets, particularly for those who commute long distances or rely on their vehicles for work.

Should the projections materialise, the July adjustment would provide welcome relief for households and businesses grappling with high transport costs.
